Revalidation of Incident Command at a Strategic Level
Revalidation of Incident Command at a Strategic Level
Under our contracted arrangements, West Midlands Fire booked a ICL4 (Tactical) revalidation assessment day with K Lamb Associates for their Strategic Level Incident Commanders. Because their Strategic Level commanders form part of an operational rota and therefore could be mobilised to a scene and potentially take command, they ensure their command competence is revalidated in line with NOG i.e., at least every 2 years. Feedback has been great;
“I feel more assured than I ever have previously now that we have KLA undertaking our assessments. The use of effective command marking criteria helps me to see the areas I have performed well, as well as areas in which I can improve. The team are great to work with and provide realistic scenarios that test our command competence.” ACFO Richard Stanton West Midlands FRS
Similarly in Tyne & Wear Fire, a KLA delivery team facilitated ICL3 revalidation assessment days for several of their officers. Set against some challenging and complex scenarios, each delegate was supported by their own services Command Support arrangements including using functional officers. The Effective Command Behavioural Marking Tool provides assessors with the data to accurately feedback to delegates on their performance.
“Another great session that really supported the validation the following day. Thanks to the team that made it a very beneficial and enjoyable experience.”
The acquisition training required to enable future revalidation assessments to take place is crucial to the holistic approach to incident command competence. In Hampshire & IOW Fire we delivered a SFJ Awards Level 6 Award in Advanced Incident Command. Four great delegates all benefitted from having expertly delivered knowledge input followed by formative and summative assessments with constructive feedback through EC.
“The IC Level 3 Command Course run by Katherine Lamb was educational, interactive, thought provoking and above all enjoyable. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, but in a very supportive way and in a safe learning environment. I wasn't sure what to expect on the Monday but by the Friday I was a L3 commander with a renewed confidence in myself and a different outlook on command in general.” SFJ Level 6 Hampshire & IOW FRS
