Revalidation, Revalidation, Revalidation.

Revalidation, Revalidation, Revalidation.

The pace and volume of Incident Command (IC) Revalidation Assessments continues across IC levels (2,3&4) in the UK Fire Service. Katherine Lamb and K Lamb Associates (KLA) delivery teams have been active in the country facilitating numerous courses with a mixture of UK Fire Service clients.

In West Yorkshire Fire, County Durham & Darlington Fire, Warwickshire Fire and Tyne & Wear Fire, KLA teams delivered SFJ Awards-Effective Command-Incident Command Level 2 and Level 3 Revalidation Assessments. On each ICL2 assessment day 3 delegates, 2 delegates on a ICL3, are exposed to different scenarios that are designed to reflect a specific risk in their service area therefore maximising the realism but in a safe and controlled environment. Using our experienced trainers along with the assessor, the delegates are supported throughout their time as incident commander. Using the ICL3 framework from Effective command behavioural Marking Framework, assessors can deliver constructive feedback on the behaviours exhibited by each delegate. For those who also subscribe annually to the EC Behavioural Marking Tool, the data collected is fed back to the service to assist them in identifying trends in IC that can be addressed through structured training.

“Although this was an assessment course, opportunities were given to observe as well as participate. Feedback was excellent and some good learning was to be had by all.”  ICL2 Warks

“Very good course, I enjoyed the training instructor's delivery and knowledge.” ICL2 Warks

In West Midlands Fire 2 of their Strategic Commanders attended the next phase of their SFJ Awards Level 7 Award in Strategic Incident Command in Fire and Rescue Services with KLA. This phase sees the delegates demonstrate their skill in chairing a Strategic Coordination Group meeting (SCG). Hosted by the massively experienced Staffordshire Civil Contingencies Unit (CCU), the delegates, assessed by a KLA Strategic Assessor, are exposed to a realistic no-notice scenario that becomes a Major Incident, at least for most of the Cat 1 responders. Managing the group of experienced and credible role players, the delegate is put under a significant amount of pressure to coordinate responses to some challenging issues.

County Durham & Darlington Fire are the latest service to engage KLA to deliver our on-line version of SFJ Awards Level 7 Award in Revalidation of Strategic Incident Command. This format has proved phenomenally successful for Strategic Commanders who have previously attained their initial SFJ Awards Level 7 Award with KLA and want to ensure maintenance of competency.

For those interested in enhancing their Incident Command training plans, KLA offers structured IC programs across IC levels 1-4, led by experienced trainers and assessors. You can explore KLA’s full range of services and get in touch through our website: www.klambassociates.com
